Foods and Drink that Stain Your Teeth

Foods and Drink that Stain Your Teeth

According to the District of Columbia Academy of General Dentistry, what we eat and drink is one of the major causes of teeth stains and discoloration.  This blogpost will highlight some of the foods and drinks that can stain your teeth.

Anything that contains tobacco can affect your teeth. Whether you are chewing tobacco or smoking it can lead to yellow staining and many other problems. Sometimes, tobacco use can result in brown spots or discoloration as well.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee may have many health benefits, but it is certainly not good for teeth. It is highly acidic and may cause tooth enamel erosion, making your teeth thin and brittle. The same goes for different types of tea. They also damage your teeth’s outer protective covering and lead to stains, discoloration, and many other problems.

Americans love their sauces, and love it as a condiment for all sorts of food. Unfortunately, these sauces are bad news for your teeth. Most sauces have bright colored pigments that cling to teeth, causing discoloration and stains. They are also acidic and damage the enamel layer as well.

One of the reasons people often judge those with stained teeth is that they associated stains with heavy drinking and smoking. Besides causing stains and discoloration, too much alcohol also causes gum diseasetooth decay, and mouth sores. Dentists and doctors also believe that alcohol is one of the most common causes of oral cancer.

Sugary Drinks and Soda

Most beverages with soda contain phosphoric acid and chromogens. While the former harms your teeth’s protective coating, the latter leads to yellowish and dingy coating. Some home remedies may help you deal with the stains, but they are not always effective. If you are hooked on to such drinks, consider using a straw to avoid them coming into contact with your teeth directly.
